Sister Thecla Aguilar, RSHM, died at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, on Wednesday, September 23, 2020.
Sr. Thecla had been a member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 70 years. She was born in Simijaca, Colombia, on September 5, 1931 to Eva Gomez and Jose Aguilar.
She entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary at Marymount in Tarrytown, NY, on June 25, 1948, where she made her first vows on April 26, 1950 and her final vows on August 28, 1955.
Sr. Thecla’s ministries took her to many parts of the RSHM world.
She worked with sisters, faculty, and students in New York at Marymount Secondary School, Tarrytown (1950-1952); Sacred Heart of Mary, Bronx, (1952-1960); St. Anne’s, Garden City; (1960-1965) and in Virginia at Marymount, Arlington (1965-1966 and 2001-2008)); Marymount School, Richmond (1966-1968); and St. Bridget’s, Richmond (1967-1979).
Sr. Thecla also served in Europe. She was a kindergarten assistant at Marymount School, Neuilly/Paris , France (1979-1990); a member of the staff of the RSHM Generalate in Rome, Italy (1990-1992); moderator of the boarding students at Marymount International School, London, England(1998-1999); and on the staff of Istituto Marymount, Rome, Italy (1999-2001).
Sr. Thecla was a member of the staff of Cormaria Retreat House, Sag Harbor, NY (1992 to 1998), involved in parish outreach at St Catharine of Alexandria, Brooklyn, NY (2008-2015).
She volunteered at Marymount School, London; in Okeechobee, FL; and at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY. She was living Marymount Convent at the time of her death.
She is survived by nieces and nephews and by the members of her RSHM community.
Services
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Mass of Christian Burial will be private. She will be buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
