Sister Cecilia Camargo RSHM died at Marymount Convent, Friday, March 12, 2021. She was 93 years of age and had been a member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 65 years.
She was born Rosa Camargo in Boyaca, Colombia, on February 1, 1928, to Jesus Camargo and Eva Pirateque.
She entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Bogota, Columbia on June 24, 1953 and three months later she was sent to Marymount Tarrytown, NY to begin her novitiate on September 3. She made her first vows on April 10, 1955 in Tarrytown, where she also made her final vows on August 15, 1960.
Shortly after making her first vows, Sister Cecilia returned to Colombia to begin the first of her ministries, as a member of the support staff in Marymount Schools in Bogota (1995-1959; 1968-1971) and Barranquilla (1959-1967).
The second phase of Sister Cecilia’s ministry was one of mission work in Colombia. She served in Guacamayas (1967-1968), Cartagena (1971-1973), Rio Negro (1973-1975), and taught kindergarten in Florencia (1975-1980).
Sister Cecilia returned to the United States in 1980 to assist in RSHM retreat centers, as a member of the staff at Cormaria Retreat House in Sag Harbor, NY (1980-1983) and St. Joseph’s Center, Tarrytown, NY (1983-1985). She ministered to the retired sisters living at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, and also volunteered at the RSHM LIFE Center in Sleepy Hollow, NY, and Tarrytown Hall Care Center in Tarrytown, NY (1985-2008). Her final year of active ministry was at St. Catharine of Alexandria Parish in Brooklyn, NY where she spent a year in parish outreach (2008-2009).
In 2009, Sister Cecilia went back to Marymount Convent as a sister in active retirement and continued the volunteering as she had done previously. She was living at Marymount Convent at the time of her death.
Sister Cecilia is survived by family in Colombia and by the members of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary.
