Sister Marie O’Malley, RSHM, died peacefully at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, on Wednesday, January 26, 2022.
Sister Marie O’Malley RSHM, previously known as Sister St. Clement, died peacefully at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, Wednesday, January 26, 2022. She was 92 years of age and had been a member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 72 years.
She was born Marie Celine O’Malley in New York, NY, on June 10, 1929, to Andre and Norah O’Malley.
She received a BA in English from Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY, an MA in English from Hunter College, New York, NY, and was certified as a hospital chaplain by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.
After graduating from Sacred Heart of Mary Academy, Marmion Avenue, Bronx, NY, she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary at the RSHM Novitiate in Tarrytown, NY, on July 22, 1947. She made her first vows on February 9, 1949, in Tarrytown, where she also made her final vows on August 29, 1954.
Sister Marie’s ministry in the field of elementary and secondary education began in the Lower School of Marymount School of New York (1949-1952). She taught at St. Bridget’s School (1952-1953) and Marymount School (1953-1955) in Richmond, VA; and then at the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary, Park Terrace, Manhattan, NY (1955-1959). She taught in Sacred Heart of Mary High School, Montebello, CA (1959-1963) and Corvallis High School, Studio City, CA (1963-1964).
Returning to New York, Sister Marie taught at Marymount School of New York (1964-1966) and at Mother Butler Memorial High School, Bronx, NY (1966-1970). While teaching at Marymount Manhattan College, she also worked in the Finance Office of the Eastern American Province (1971-1972).
She taught at St. Michael’s Academy, Manhattan, NY (1972-1973); was secretary at Mother Butler Memorial High School, Bronx, NY (1973-1977); and taught at St. Anne’s School, Garden City, NY (1979-1980).
Sr. Marie was coordinator of St. Anthony’s Center, Manhattan, NY (1977-1979) and was a member of the secretarial staff in the Archdiocese of New York Office of Vicar for Religious (1980-1981) and Cathedral High School, New York City. (1981-1982).
After studying at the St. Louis University Ministry Program (1982-1983), Sister Marie began a new phase of ministry and became certified as a hospital chaplain by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.
She served in Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, NY, and Good Samaritan Hospital, West Islip, NY (1983-1989), and worked with the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor, Hampton Bays, NY, visiting patients in their homes (1989-2000). She was a spiritual director at Joshua’s Place, Southampton, NY (2000-2002).
In 2002, Sister Marie moved to Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY as a member of the staff. She retired from full time ministry in 2012 and was living at Marymount Convent at the time of her death.
Sister Marie is predeceased by her parents and brother Desmond O’Malley. She is survived by her brother Andrew Patrick O’Malley, niece Marianne Soucy, nephew Patrick O’Malley and by the members of her religious community.
