Sister Rosa Ramirez, RSHM, died peacefully at Phelps Memorial Hospital, Tarrytown, NY, on Sunday, February 6, 2022.
Sister Rosa Ramirez, RSHM, a resident of Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, died Sunday, February 6, 2022, three days before her 90th birthday. She had been a member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 66 years.
She was born in Bogota, Colombia, on February 9, 1932, to Aurelio and Rosa Castro Ramirez.
After coming to know the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Bogota, she entered the congregation at the RSHM Novitiate in Tarrytown, NY, on April 11, 1953. She made her first vows on April 10, 1955, in Tarrytown, where she also made her final vows on August 28, 1960.
After her first profession, Sister Rosa remained at Marymount as a member of the support staff (1955-1960). She then went to the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary, Sag Harbor, NY, where she worked with the religious and lay staff and with the boarding and day students (1960-1968). She also ministered at St. Thomas Aquinas, Bronx, NY (1968-1970) and at St. Anne’s, Garden City, NY (1970-1971).
She assisted with the senior sisters living at Marian Center, Tarrytown, NY (1972-1973).
Sister Rosa went back to Colombia to help in the educational and social ministries of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (1973-1977). She was one of three sisters sent to serve the different social classes in a parish in Cartagena. One of her responsibilities was working with parents and godparents to give them the tools to become educators in faith for their children.
After ministering in Colombia, she returned to Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY for one year (1977-1978), before joining the staff of St. Francis Xavier, NYC (1978-1980).
In 1981, she moved to Tarrytown, NY, and joined the staff of Marymount Convent, which had become the home of the senior sisters. In addition to assisting the sisters living at Marymount, she worked at St. Joseph’s Retreat Center.
In 1994, Sr. Rosa retired from full-time active ministry. She was living at Marymount Convent at the time of her death.
Sister Rosa is predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Maximino, Ismael, Ernesto, Alicides, and Ruben. She is survived by her cousin, Sister Maria del Carmen, RSHM, nieces and nephews in Colombia, and by the members of her RSHM religious community.
