Sister Anne Barat Corcoran, RSHM, died peacefully at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, on Saturday, May 7, 2022.   

Sister Anne Barat Corcoran RSHM died at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, Saturday, May 7, 2022. She was 96 years of age and had been a member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 69 years. 

She was born Ann Corcoran in Newport, RI, on September 23, 1925, to Edward and Mary Stella Walsh Corcoran.

She received a BA in Liberal Arts from Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY; an MN in Nursing from Yale University in New Haven, CT; and an MA in Theology from Manhattan College in New York City. 

After graduating from Yale University in 1950, she entered the congregation at the RSHM Novitiate in Tarrytown, NY, on September 8, 1951. She made her first vows on April 5, 1953, in Tarrytown, where she also made her final vows on August 24, 1958. 

Sister Anne Barat began the first phase of her ministry at Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY (1953-1967) where she was the college infirmarian and also taught biology. She taught at the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary, Manhattan, NY, and St. Thomas Aquinas, Bronx, NY (1967-1970). She also served as the school nurse at Sacred Heart of Mary High School, Bronx, NY (1974-1976).

She served on the Eastern American Provincial Leadership Board as the Area Representative for Africa/Europe (1970-1973).

In 1976, she began a new phase of her ministry, concentrating on nursing in the rural US and mission areas in Africa. She went to southwest Virginia as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital, a small hospital in rural Norton, VA. She was named Supervisor of Nursing at St. Mary’s in 1981. She went to Zimbabwe in 1982, where she was asked by the bishop to collaborate in the reopening of St. Andrew’s Mission in Marange. She spent 12 years (1982-1994) at St. Andrew’s as director of the small mission hospital/clinic. Located in an area where there were no nearby doctors or other trained medical professionals, she was the nurse, the midwife, and the nursing instructor, as well as, transported patients to the nearest hospital where there were doctors.

After returning from Zimbabwe, she worked in Fincastle, VA for one year (1995-1996) and then moved to Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, the home of the senior sisters. She served as a member of the Convent staff until retiring from active ministry. She was a member of the Convent community at the time of her death. 

Sister Anne Barat is predeceased by her parents and brothers Rev. John Corcoran MM, and William W. Corcoran and survived by her brothers, Michael R. Corcoran, Edward B. Corcoran, nieces and nephews, and by her RSHM sisters.

Services at Marymount Convent, 32 Warren Avenue, Tarrytown, NY. Visiting Tuesday, May 10, 4:00 – 7:00 pm, with Vigil Service 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday, May 11, 10:00 am. Burial Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
