Sister Christina Murray RSHM, previously known as Sister Columban, died peacefully at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, Tuesday, August 30, 2022. She was 89 years of age and had been a member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 64 years.
She was born Catherine Christina Murray in County Lietrim, Ireland, on December 23, 1932, to John and Bridget Rose Murray.
She received a BA in History from Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY, and an LPN from Elizabeth Seton College in Yonkers, NY.
She entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary at the RSHM Novitiate in Tarrytown, NY, on February 2, 1957. The next year, on August 24, 1958, she made her first vows in Tarrytown, where she also made her final vows on August 25, 1963.
Sister Christina’s first assignment was to Marymount College in Tarrytown, where she worked in the Tea House (1958-1960). Assigned to St. Thomas Aquinas School in the Bronx, she began a 16-year ministry as an elementary school teacher. She taught in New York at St. Thomas Aquinas (1960-1966); St. Andrew’s, Sag Harbor (1966-1970); St. Mary’s, Long Island City (1970-1971); St. Anne’s, Garden City (1971-1972); and in Virginia at St. Bridget’s, Richmond (1972-1976). In 1976, she moved to Tarrytown to Marymount Secondary School. When the school closed she continued to live at Marymount, helping with the retired sisters. During this time she also studied nursing and became an LPN (1976-1984).
Sister Christina returned to Sag Harbor, NY, in 1984. Her first ministry there was at St. Andrew’s where she taught and was the school librarian (1984-1989). She then began a new ministry as a home care nurse working with patients in the Sag Harbor area (1989-2009).
In 2009, Sister Christina moved to Marymount Convent. She was a member of the Convent community at the time of her death.
Sister Christina is survived by her sister, Sr. Eveline Murray, RSHM, her sister-in-law, Noreen Murray; numerous nieces and nephews living in New Jersey and Ireland, and the members of her religious community.
Services
Services at Marymount Convent, 32 Warren Avenue, Tarrytown, NY. Visiting hours are Thursday, September 1, 4:00 – 7:00 pm with a Vigil Service at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on, Friday, September 2, at 10:30 am, followed by burial Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains, NY.
